RMIT English Worldwide celebrates 50 years

RMIT English Worldwide (REW) has been providing education solutions to clients around the globe for 50 years

In 1968, REW started as a language centre supporting students on their entry into RMIT University. It has evolved into a centre of excellence developing and delivering English language programs and testing.

These have included English for Academic Purposes, Aviation English, Business English and Migrant English, as well as English language proficiency tests for aviation personnel and professional development for ESL teachers.

RMIT Training Chief Executive Officer, Rachel Holthouse reflected on the impact REW has made around the world.

“So many lives have been positively impacted by REW over the last 50 years—not just students who have come to Melbourne but also CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) graduates who have joined the industry, and students and professionals who we’ve helped by delivering programs in their home countries.

“Our programs are developed for international students and professionals, many of whom come from emerging regions, and although we operate as a commercial company, we have long recognised the important contribution our education programs make to individual, family and regional progress,” Ms Holthouse said.

Giving back to the community is a high priority for REW.

“Many of our English language solutions are delivered in countries where only the wealthy are able to access them. Our Melbourne-based programs are also limited to those who can afford them. The need for programs that unlock further education opportunities is widespread and critical for developing regions.”

REW offers scholarships, sponsorships, free classes and educator development, demonstrating a genuine interest in education for all.

Mr Kuibamrund Soraphong, an employee of the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary in Thailand commented on his scholarship experience in 2011.

“I would highly recommend studying at REW to other Thai students. The curriculum is really challenging and focuses on university study. It also helps prepare you for life,” he said.

Feedback like this confirms the fact that REW programs change lives. Finding sustainable ways to help others on their learning journey is an ongoing focus for REW.

One of REW’s key differences from other providers is its in-house Curriculum unit comprising specialist ESL writers, assessment experts, editors, designers and audio production personnel. This unit develops materials that reflect the latest research and best practices in teaching and learning, which can be tailored to specific markets.
