Professional development for educators at English Australia conference

RMIT English Worldwide (REW) Melbourne Director, Lynda Beagle, recently attended the 30th English Australia conference held in Adelaide with three colleagues from the REW education team.

The annual conference is attended by English language teachers, management and associated staff from all over Australia. The theme this year was Empowering Global Citizens and the invited speakers, plenaries and concurrent sessions provided thought-provoking ideas as well as practical suggestions for classroom use.

Ms Beagle was involved in a speed mentoring session where new managers had a series of 10-minute mini-meetings with experienced managers from across the industry.

As the recipient of last year’s National Award for Academic Leadership, Ms Beagle shared her expertise with participants.

Fellow colleagues Peter Higgins, Team Leader; Anna Bicknell, Study Support Coordinator; and Denise Patience, Language Educator, also attended the conference as part of their professional development for 2017.

Mr Higgins said the opening session, delivered by the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Hieu Van Le, particularly resonated with him and the conference theme.

“Arriving in Australia as a refugee with few possessions and basic English skills, Mr Le recounted his journey to one of the highest offices in the land. His address was infused with some amusing anecdotes reminding us of the challenges involved in mastering a second language,” Mr Higgins said.

“As his very personal example shows, these challenges are more than balanced by the rich opportunities that such an experience provides.”

Ms Bicknell said she enjoyed learning about how other schools and language centres are helping students with extra academic support.

“I really enjoyed the session by JJ Wilson, from Western New Mexico University, on English language teaching and social justice,” she said.

“I was reminded of my own experiences at REW and why it’s so important to empower students and help them find their voice and tell their stories.”
