Chinese Teacher Development group visits REW Melbourne

New Oriental Teacher Development Program participants at REW Melbourne.

RMIT English Worldwide (REW) Melbourne was pleased to welcome 25 teachers from the New Oriental Education and Technology Group earlier this month for a 2 week intensive tailored Teacher Development Program.

New Oriental, or Xin-Dong-Fang in Mandarin, is a private teaching institution with locations all over China.  Their philosophy is to "inspire and teach Chinese students of all ages to improve their lives and expand their horizons through a lifelong commitment to learning".

New Oriental teaches and tutors students across a range of ages and subjects. The visiting teachers were all teachers of English, and this program exposed them to a range of different teaching skills and possibilities.

The concept of student-centred learning was of particular interest to the group, who were eager to take their new skills home and practise them in their own classrooms.

REW Program Executive – Tailored English, Lina Cucinotta, said this was due to the teaching skills of Language Educators, Sara Kablaoui and Chrisoula Simos, who delivered the enriching program across the two weeks.

Ms Simos said the program had been an invaluable learning experience.

“As their trainer, I felt privileged to have shared this experience with them and to have guided them through a profound change in their journey as teachers,” she said.

As well as classroom input, the program included a number of excursions in and around Melbourne with the aim of exposing participants to Australian culture and lifestyle.

These after-class activities were a highlight for the group who couldn’t wait to get out and about to explore the beautiful city.
